Creature From The Black Lagoon

I was so excited to see part of the inspiration for Shape of Water and make my own insights about the decades long discussion about “the other” that they both respond to.

I liked the simplicity that allows for so much focus on certain attributes and room for theory to be built on, as we have seen happen. The cast wasn’t boring and all served different, interesting roles that, according to the reading, demonstrate different masculinities and their responses towards “the other”. The sympathy for the monster doesn’t seem like an accident considering the lack of seeing the heroes happy ending and the focus on the monster’s death at the end.

The Creature From the Black Lagoon is a lot more appealing than the main characters due to the power it has as well as its mystery. The scientists depend upon the Creature for a compelling plot, which is proven when the Creature appears as someone to sympathize with explicitly in “The Shape of Water” and any sort of scientist characters are made more devilish and made the villain.
